Indonesia: Pioneering the Circular Plastic Bottle. PlastiLoop, a Veolia Solution

Indonesia is the world’s 2nd largest ocean plastic polluter, with only 7% of plastic waste recycled and 1.29 million tonnes leaking into the sea annually. This urgent challenge calls for bold action.

Veolia and Danone Aqua partnered to build Indonesia’s largest PET bottle recycling plant in Pasuruan, East Java. Since 2019, this facility has transformed nearly 1 billion post-consumer bottles yearly into high-quality, food-grade rPET pellets. The plant’s blockchain traceability ensures full transparency from collection to final product.

This circular solution creates 250 jobs, including socially inclusive roles, and supports Danone’s goal to collect more plastic waste than it produces by 2025. Using PlastiLoop’s recycled polymers cuts CO₂ emissions by over 70% and water use by more than 80%, significantly reducing plastic pollution and preserving natural resources.

As Southeast Asia moves toward mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, this plant sets the standard for scalable, sustainable plastic recycling infrastructure. A blueprint now replicated in Japan.
